We made it to the DR yesterday, with only a couple of incidents. Bekah missed her flight, but she was able to get one for today. We made it through security, with the only loss being Kassidy's peanut butter. Everyone else made it through all right, even though the agents were a little irked with us for taking so long.
Those who have not been to the DR before got their first real look at the culture when we left the airport. Kassidy found out that it's not always a good idea to be friendly and smile and wave at everyone you see.
Our drive to Juan Tomas was a real Dominican experience. Our bus had no air conditioning, and an open door. We got to ride through traffic, see people cut out in front of, and drive on the sidewalk. We were definitely not somewhere with Georgia's traffic laws! We also drove through two roads submerged with several inches of water. At the second one it was single lane traffic (not including the motorcycyles), and we ended up face to face with a big truck. They backed up and let us by, but we almost took off their side view mirror.
Last night we pumped up our big ball volleyball, and played a game with some Dominicans. It was a really good opportunity to meet people. Afterwards we went to the church to practice our music, and then just sang for fun.
Today began our first full day in the DR. After a good (and actually cool) night's sleep under our mosquito nets, a few of us took COLD showers, and then went to eat our Dominican breakfast. After breakfast the guys worked on fixing lawn mowers and mowing grass, while us girls sorted and organized our camp supplies.
After cutting out bunches of picture frame backs, we went on visitation with two Dominicans to the village of Juan Tomas. We passed out tracts, New Testaments, and invitations to English camp. Mason also passed out candy, and was everyone's favorite.
Walking through the village is really eye opening. Most of the houses are the size of one or two rooms in a typical American house. As Mason said, "It really makes you grateful for what you have."
By the way, Mr. and Mrs. Clark, Justin wrote you a long email, but it did not go through. He said to tell you that he loves you.
~Lisa (with some help), for the whole group
